The editors of Power & Motoryacht have taken out first place in the Boat Writers Awards for Best Boat Test on the Palm Beach 70 and Best Boat Video when they raced the Palm Beach 70 against a train with us in the “Commuter Challenge” late last year.
With humble acceptance of the awards, Editor-in-Chief Dan Harding speaks of his passion to produce great content at Power & Motoryacht:
“Our mission at Power & Motoryacht is to produce content that educates, entertains and inspires our readers. We don’t write or create videos to win awards, we push ourselves to create the very best content because that’s what our audience deserves. Still, I have to admit, it’s really rewarding to be recognized by your peers for that effort.”
The editors walked away with three first place finishes, five third place honors and six honorable mentions, an outstanding outcome! Among the award recipients were Bill Pike, Simon Murray, Bob Arrington, Krista Karlson, Gary Reich, John Turner and Dan Harding.
Editor-in-Chief Dan Harding placed first in the Boat Tests and Reviews category for “The Palm Beach 70” and Digital Editor John V. Turner took out first place in the Boating Videos category for the “Palm Beach 70 Commuter Challenge.” Palm Beach Motor Yachts has sold 7 yachts to date since the flagship’s debut at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in October, with 4 currently still in build.
When we originally spoke with the guys from Power & Motoryacht about the launch of our new flagship Palm Beach 70, with shared enthusiasm the idea of a staged race was floated, and everyone happily put plans into action to make it happen.
So, on a warm New England day, poor Simon showed up in a full suit and tie to the dock, while Dan was looking entertained in his leisurely attire. We know who drew the short straw here. As the sweat began to form on Simon’s brow and he left for the train station in the heat, we embarked on our journey down to Manhattan via the Hells Gate Bridge – that looks remarkably like Sydney’s Harbour Bridge – and along the East River.
We had time to stop and take advantage of a few nice little photo opportunities along the way, hoping to get a shot of a train crossing one of the bridges to tie it all together, but alas, that part didn’t happen. Our chase boat for the day was a GT50 open, easily manoeuvrable, fast and nimble – the perfect platform.
The plan was for Dan to meet Simon at the bull on Wall Street, then hang around Liberty Island and hope for that perfect golden hour shoot with the city skyline in the background. Instead, what we got was a heavy storm front rolling in, as dark as night and menacing as you could imagine.
