Wild Oats XI Takes Line Honuors in Sydney

In a nail-biting finish of the 2017 Land Rover Sydney Gold Yacht Race, Wild Oats XI, skippered by Palm Beach Motor Yachts founder & CEO, Mark Richards, has taken line honours by 3 and a half minutes over her old rival Black Jack. The almost 400-nm race is the first meeting of the two rivals this year as they gear up for what is sure to be one of the best Sydney to Hobart races in years.

Slow breezes upwind made for a lot of tacking, and quite the spectacle as Wild Oats XI and Black Jack danced along Australia’s East Coast in a competitive and close-quartered display, both flirting with lead position. Photos courtesy of CYCA.

“It was a good race and it’s always satisfying to get to the finish line first but it’s never easy, especially with a boat like Black Jack out there. It was good, beautiful racing, dead upwind the whole way – we did over 100 tacks but it was a lot of fun.” – Mark Richards, Palm Beach Motor Yachts CEO
